Stud Profile
The Mc Gill family bought the homestead block of Nargoon in 1914 and the family has since continued to add to the original block. The country is comprised of black soil blue gum flats rising to iron bark forest country with most of it being improved with pasture. Gordon McGill has now passed this property on to Bob, Sheree & family.
The family established the Charolais stud in 1990 finding them to be superior after having tried several other breeds. The main aim was to add thickness and early maturity with added growth rate to the high grade Brahman commercial herd.
In the year 2000 it was decided that Bob & Sheree would manage the Stud.
Our Stud herd is now based on French genetics with sires including Fernvale Zambo, Ayr Editor’s Sherwood, Cooranga All Blacks, ANC Zest and Evora Rancher. E grade sires also contribute to our herd including Ayr Extra’s Heidel and Sirrah Anakin. A small selection of breeders are mated to Brahman bulls including Garglen Saxon and Garglen 5616.
The females are paddocked in single sire herds of 30 head. We also run an AI program with imported semen on a select group of females. The cows start calving in early September and calves are weaned the following year. The replacement females are evaluated for temperament, fertility, mothering ability and do ability, whilst taking into consideration Breed Plan Figures. Heifers are mated at two years of age and are required to calve out and go back in calf with no special treatment. The sale bulls are also treated to the same level of selectivity, including a full VACCINATION & WORMING program, SCANNED & a full VET & SEMEN test extending to the high level of MORPHOLOGY. So when sold they are ready to go straight to work.
Nargoon Charolais has won many prime cattle championships in the local area culminating in two Grand Champion Pens of the Show titles at the Royal Brisbane Show. We have found this to be the best way to advertise the progeny our bulls breed. Our clients have also won fat cattle competitions. Just another convincing result for Nargoon Bulls.
