The McGill Family bought the homestead block of Nargoon in 1914, since then the family has continued to add to the original block. The country is comprised of black soil blue gum flats rising to iron bark forest country with most of it being improved with pasture. Gordon and Shirley McGill have now passed on the management of this property on to Bob, Sheree, Madisen and Lachlan.
In 1997 Andrew and Bob purchased "Willsmere", a commercial breeding block at Talwood. Andrew and Lesleigh along with their children Mick, Rosie and Luke run this property. The weaner steers are then sent to Nargoon for finishing. The steers which have a higher Charolais content are grown out to 400kg and placed in the Nargoon feedlot and fed for 110 days average for the Japanese market. The remaining steers are fattened on grass and sold at 2 1/2 years of age with an average weight of 300 to 350kg dressed.
Our Charolais & Charbray Stud herd is also run on Nargoon, it comprises of 200 select females being mainly of French genetics. We started breeding Charolais in 1990 finding them to be superior after trying several other breeds. Our main aim being to add thickness to our high grade Brahman herd and give early maturity to their progeny. Our cows are single sire maters in herds of 20-30 head. Also we do an AI program each year using our best females. The cows start calving in early September and the calves are weaned the following year. Heifers are mated at 2 years of age and are required to calve out and go back into calf with no special treatment. They are also evaluated for temperament, fertility, mothering ability, milk and do ability.
Our Sale Bulls are weaned at 9-10 months of age on to oats. When the spring has broken they are put onto improved forest country. We are of the firm opinion that bulls should learn to forage for them selves. Before sale they are fed on oats and a low grain ration if required. All bulls are fully vaccinated and soundness evaluated, so when sold they are ready for work with a full guarantee.
Nargoon Stud have won many prime cattle championships in the local area, culminating in two Grand Champion pens of the Royal Brisbane Show. We have found this to be the best way to advertise the progeny our bulls breed.
